When designing calendar tools like Calendly or Google Calendar Appointments, UX Designers and Product Owners should prioritise convenience, ease of use, and proactive privacy protection. Ensuring privacy is embedded into the design from the start enhances trust and security for users.
Big no no: Currently, scheduling links typically remain accessible indefinitely—or until manually deleted.
Enhancing this design can further protect sensitive information. By implementing thoughtful design, users gain increased confidence and security, knowing their schedules remain private and protected from misuse.
Privacy by Default means actively safeguarding user information through intuitive, secure design. Designing products that automatically secure information reduces user workload and increases trust in the product.
Here are ways UX Designers and Product Owners can seamlessly integrate Privacy by Default:
One-Time Links: Enable single-use scheduling links that automatically disable after booking. This significantly enhances privacy and limits exposure. Similar to Google's Location sharing functionality.
Automatic Expiry: Shared scheduling links should have default expiry dates or time limits, easily adjustable by users. Setting this proactively enhances user security.
Selective Visibility: Provide precise control over calendar details visible through shared links. Allow users to highlight available booking slots clearly, ensuring their private schedule remains secure and confidential.
Notifications and Alerts: Regularly inform users when their shared calendar link is accessed or viewed. This transparent approach boosts user confidence and promptly alerts them to any potential concerns.
Adopting these practices ensures UX Designers and Product Owners create products that respect and protect user privacy proactively, aligning convenience seamlessly with robust security measures.
Designing with privacy as a foundational principle is thoughtful, responsible, and increasingly essential in our digitally connected world.
